Monterey – Ellen MacNeill Higbee Wennerholm, age 97, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Monday, May 28, 2007 at Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula. Ellen was born January 16, 1910 in Grand Rapids, Michigan and was the eldest of the four children of Grace Baker Higbee and Clark Earl Higbee. She was a graduate of the University of Michigan and received a Master's Degree in English from the University of Chicago. After completing her education, Ellen traveled west to teach high school in Laramie, Wyoming where she later married and gave birth to her son, Klar Cranston Wennerholm.
A few years later, Ellen moved with her son and mother to Palo Alto, California where she resided for over 50 years. She worked in the Office of the General Secretary, now the Office of Development, at Stanford University for 35 years. Ellen was an avid world traveler, hiker, voracious reader of poetry, natural history, biography, fine literature, and detective stories. She loved all kinds of dogs and was especially devoted to her own dogs who were special members of the family.
Ellen was preceded in death by her beloved son, Klar; her sisters, Doris Higbee Rutledge Brown and Jane Higbee Twhigg; her brother, John Higbee; and her grandniece, Sara Christine Rutledge.
She is survived by her granddaughter, Erin Wennerholm, and great granddaughter, Scarlett Wennerholm, both of Carmel Valley; her daughter-in-law, Tempe Wennerholm of Carmel; her nephews, Michael Rutledge of Reno, Nevada, Alan Twhigg of Mountain View, Niall Higbee of Oxford, England; her sister-in-law, Joan Higbee of Leicester, England; grandnephew, Mark Rutledge, and grandnieces Rikki Rutledge Baker, Angela Rutledge Bowcutt, Leslie Rutledge Walker; and ten great grandnieces and grandnephews.
A private family service was held at the Little Chapel by- the-Sea followed by burial in El Carmelo Cemetery, Pacific Grove. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals of Monterey County, P.O. Box 3058, Monterey, CA 93940 or to a charity of the donor's choice.
